For technologists and business owners, the checklist of technical SEO components can feel unwieldy – I’m a fan of the way this article breaks it down into a pyramid of priorities to help make sense of the significance of different elements.

First and foremost, run regular audits of your site’s technical SEO performance. Depending on how often you make changes to the site or load content, this could be a quarterly or annual process – get it on the calendar and don’t let it slip by! Staying on top of your indexed and linkable sites is the first step in an audit and can help you lay the foundation of your SEO functionality, which is crawlability. A site needs to have an unblocked sitemap, be open to bots and feature the best possible sequence of findable pages.

To build on this foundation, indexable URL’s are the next most important – which is to say, URL’s that can be cataloged in a search results page. Accessibility to bots, which includes everything from optimized load time to JavaScript rendering (a topic I cover here) is a complex and critical step in the hierarchy. The pyramid is topped by what may be considered the most obvious and most approachable topics of technical SEO, Rankability and Clickability. However, good reviews and in-site breadcrumbs are only going to be useful in the long run if they build on a strong, algorithm-optimized foundation.
