Google’s Latest Presentation on the State of SEO Sets New Standards

A recent video released by Google shares insightful, new data about how businesses and their websites adhered to 2020’s SEO standards. In the video, a guest presenter shares key takeaways from the SEO portion of 2020’s Web Almanac, a detailed rundown of how the web worked last year. The analysis in the Almanac is derived from 7.5 million websites.

Here are some key points from the SEO section of the Web 2020 Almanac:

  • Generally, websites made slight gains in crawlability, or visibility to the search engine’s algorithm, via proper backlinking.
  • Landing pages have become slightly wordier. The median word count for homepages was 348 words, up from 306 words in 2019. This does not necessarily mean that content should always aim for high word counts. Being clear, specific, and descriptive are the most essential elements for the landing page content to succeed.
  • Landing pages had 10% fewer links than they did in 2019. Of the 67 total links on the media page, most of them linked internally.
  • Only 11% of websites are not mobile-friendly; 83% of websites use responsive features, meaning they are built with the mobile experience in mind.
